Plus Size Guide to Wearing Booties

Hello ladies!
I'm assuming you're a lady if you're reading this but if not, welcome gentlemen.

First of all, let me say that I in no way consider myself a fashion blogger. Shoot, I don't even consider myself a blogger period. But I do take a little, teeny tiny bit of pride in thinking that over the last 24 years I've learned what looks best for my body type, which is plus size. I know that for plus size women it is a daily struggle to decide whether to dress trendy and wear what's "in", or to wear "what flatters us" and risk looking like we shopped at The Gap....ten years ago. But who says we have to choose?? A coworker recently told me that booties were only for skinny girls, and while I think skinny girls wear them very well, I think that there are certain ways we can style them to look good for our body shapes. Who says we can't get in on the fun, too?

Before I talk about the 3 looks I've put together, I want to talk about the number one rule to wearing booties, or really anything if you want to make sure you're flattering your body type: Silhouette. When trying on outfits, I always try to ask myself "what area of my body is this outfit bringing attention to?". If it's bringing attention to a body part I'm not particularly comfortable with, I either try to style the item a different way, or I pass on it, because it's not giving me a flattering silhouette. Booties are so tricky because many of them stop either at the ankle or above, and when you create lines at a thicker part of your body, which for many of us is the calf, it can make that part of your body look even larger. So the trick is to create a silhouette that takes the attention away from the part of your body that you don't like.

Another thing before we jump in. I realize none of these outfits are exactly groundbreaking. I like simple and classic. I've just taken outfits that I would wear or that I think would flatter any body shape (I would wear all of these, tbh). This post is mostly for the women who are unsure if they can be a part of the bootie party, too. There are probably so many of you who have already learned how to style these for yourself and I'd love to hear your suggestions!
This first look is probably the most un-fussy, if that's a word. We know that utility jackets are always in for fall/winter and they look especially cute when paired with a bootie. What I think is unsettling for many plus size girls are the skinny jeans turned up at the hem. But this look is all about this particular jacket.  It's hitting at the thigh and takes in slightly at the waist. This creates the illusion of a longer torso and an hourglass figure, leaving us with a flattering silhouette. If the jacket was shorter and stopped right at the hips, it would create a line right through the middle, which is often one of the widest points on our body. The jacket, paired with booties that have a nice size heel on them and dark jeans, are going to make us look taller and slimmer. When I wear a slouchy jacket or a seemingly relaxed outfit, I like to pair it with a structured bag to balance it out. As for jewelry, I'm a hoops girl, but just about any earrings with this look will do. And as usual, I love a good bracelet stack. I think that smaller bracelets paired together are sometimes a little more flattering than one large cuff.

This second look is something I'd wear to a holiday party or Christmas service at church. The key to this one is that the tights are the same color as the booties. This is going to make your legs look like they are miiiiles long. The swing dress can hide your tummy if that's a problem area for you and the sleeves are long enough to cover your arms. Sometimes swing dresses can seem unflattering, but if it's the right length (just above the knee) and paired with shoes with a little lift, you'll look great. I'm loving the plaids this year so I'd pair this with a plaid wrap to keep warm and some jewel toned accessories. I actually have the bag pictured and it doubles as a cross-body or you can use the handles on top.

This third look is surprisingly my favorite I think. This is something I'd wear any day. We all know there's nothing more flattering than a good pair of flare or boot cut jeans that fit just right and lift that booty. While the sweater is crew neck, which can be intimidating to busty girls, it flares a little at the bottom, almost like a relaxed empire waist fit, and I think that would flatter anyone. These leather booties just look so classic to me. Great height and would give your legs and torso a gorgeous silhouette (there's that word again). If you want to keep it classy, you can always go with pearl accessories, or if you want to make it a little modern you can do rose gold. I didn't include a bag with this one because I truly think just about anything would work.

I hear many women say they'd like to wear booties but they can't walk in heels. Now that the chunky heel is in, these or a pair of wedge booties will be just fine. The most comfortable pair of shoes I have are a pair of booties with a nice chunky heel I got from H&M a year ago. They give me just enough height to make my legs look longer, and they're very easy to walk in.

I hope any of you reading have gotten at least a few good tips from these outfits and if not, maybe just the courage to try out that pair of booties you've been too scared to wear. No matter what body shape, big or small, just remember that you're all so beautiful, inside and out.

Girl power!

Adjustments

Hey everyone, it's me, the perma-slacker. Obviously it's been a while but I wanted give a little update. Last you heard from me we were gearing up for a major change. Since then, we've moved to Richlands, which is just outside of Jacksonville. Tanner has just started a job as a lineman for the electric company and I was fortunate enough to keep my job with the company that I love. God has really, really blessed us. For a while it was hard to believe that we were going to find jobs and a house, or that the move would even be possible. I was frustrated and just tired of thinking about it. But when God shows off, he really shows off. Within 2 hours of each other I found out we were approved for a house we applied for and I was going to keep my job. 4 weeks later we're settling in and Tanner is starting his new job.

I feel selfish for even saying this, but the move hasn't been easy. I am a very routine person with some very hard habits and if I've learned anything from this transition it's that I don't deal well with change. I like to think that I can adapt to anything, but now I realize that may only apply in certain areas of my life. We've been in Richlands for a little over a month, but up until about 2 weeks ago I was having a really hard time adjusting to the changes. Working from home has been a larger adjustment than I thought it would be. I didn't realize how many distractions there were in an office, but I also didn't realize how quiet it would be at home. Overall, I feel like I'm way more productive and now that I've gotten into a routine, I love it. Since I'm home and Tanner is working elsewhere, I'm able to plan a lot better for meals and actually cook, which if you know me at all, you know that's something I don't do.

A lot of people from home have been asking how the church is going and I'm so proud to say it's going great. I love this group so much and I'm so excited for what is to come in the future. Our official launch is in March, but right now we're doing a small group on Sunday nights, as well as hosting other events throughout the community. Our preacher likes to say that we won't be a "come and see" church, but a "come and do" church and I am here-for-it! For the month of November our staff organized a coat drive with 3 drop off locations in Jacksonville, as well as hosting a clean up day at a local non-profit called CHEW. We're also hosting a set of Q & A nights at the coolest coffee shop called The Milk Road. These nights allow anyone to come in, have refreshments on us and ask  anything they'd like to know about Restore and what we stand for. Our small group has grown large enough that we now have to split into 2 small groups. God is truly, truly working in Jacksonville and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else right now.

Last night our bible study was focused on the word inclusion. In a time of such division in our country, on social media, and the news, it was so refreshing to be reminded that no matter your race, your gender, your orientation or what political party you belong to, you are loved and welcomed by God. I firmly believe it is the church's responsibility to bridge the gaps of discrimination and be as loving and Christ-like as possible.

"So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise."

We've Got News!

We are so excited to share with everyone that after a lot of talking and a lot of praying, we're headed to Jacksonville, NC.

Why Jacksonville?
We're teaming up with some awesome people to plant a church. Restore Church will open it's doors March 2017, and while that seems like a long time from now, our team has a lot to do. Jacksonville is about an hour and 30 minutes from where we currently live.

What is Restore Church?
Restore Church is a church plant that is currently being supported by the Eastern North Carolina Christian Men's Fellowship. When Tanner and I first heard about the need for a church in Jacksonville, we both agreed it was something we'd love to be apart of. Little did we know that about 2 months later we'd be officially joining the team. You can check out Restore's website or ENCCMF's website to learn more.

When Do You Leave?
Even though our first Sunday isn't until March of 2017, our plans are to move in the fall, most likely around mid-September. If anyone knows of any good neighborhoods with rental properties, feel free to get in touch with us.

Are You Crazy?
We just might be! We realize it seems like a crazy idea to some, but we're sure that this is where God is leading us. While it would be much easier to stay where we are and continue to have a "good life", we believe that God doesn't call us to just have a good life. He calls us to have great lives, which can mean to take risks, step outside of our comfort zones and do things we normally wouldn't do, all to tell others about Him. We may be crazy to go, but with how much grace and love God has given us and continues to give us, we would definitely be crazy not to. This world needs love more than ever and we want to spread it all over!

What Do You Need?
Lots of prayer and support! While we are so excited for this adventure, we'd (mostly me) be lying if we said we weren't a little nervous. Because we've had such great support from family and friends this far, we know you guys will stick with us no matter what.

Lastly, we just want to say thank you. To the people we've told so far, thank you for the support. Thank you for being optimistic, for being proud of us and for promising to be at Restore on our opening Sunday. To our parents, thank you for making us feel like we can do anything we set our minds to. To our Rosemary church family, thank you for summer camp, tough love, lifelong memories and a place to always call home.

Lemon Ice Cream & a New Kitty

Well, well, well look who's back again! MONDAY. While it may be the first day of a new work week, I'm still reminiscing about what a great weekend we had. Here's a recap:

Friday night we met Tanner's family at Cracker Barrel for dinner. So good to see them, especially our sweet little nephew, Carter. He'll be ONE this Saturday!

Saturday afternoon we went to see one of my best friends' singing debut at Howell's Mercantile in Belhaven. There was good food, great music and rocking chairs. We couldn't have asked for a better summer afternoon.

The rest of the weekend was spent playing with our newest addition, Palmer. We got him about a week ago and he is so playful. Jaz has even decided that she likes him. I'm so glad they are playing together. Tanner is just glad to have another male in the house.

What did your weekend consist of?
